SMALL GROUPS

WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP AT PEOPLES CHURCH?
A vision and commitment to do life together is what makes a gathering of individuals a small group at Peoples Church. A small group is a place where you can learn what it means to belong to each other, where you can wrestle with what it means to become more like the Jesus we follow, and a place where you can begin to build relationships of love and service to those who do not yet know Jesus. Peoples Church is in no way a collection of perfect people. In fact, a small group is all about providing an environment that is safe for each of us to grow, to ask tough questions, and to receive help and encouragement when we’ve messed things up. In a small group you will learn together what it means to follow the way of Jesus. You will study the scriptures, you will discover what it means to love God and your neighbor, you will struggle with what it means to carry one another’s burdens, and perhaps you will even be asked to share the possessions that you own. You will eat together, play together, and sometimes even cry together as you live out the way of Jesus in your time.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN A SMALL GROUP?
Your spiritual life is a journey, it is a process. Just as in your physical life you had a point of conception, a birth, and growth from childhood to adulthood, your spiritual life has stages just as real. Wherever you are in your journey, we believe that spiritual growth occurs best as you grow relationally with others. At Peoples Church the best opportunity for this type of growth experience happens in a small group. In a small group you will find a place to belong and be loved by others. In a small group you will wrestle with what it means to become more like Jesus. In a small group you will work toward building relationships of love and service to people who do not know God. A life of growth that is committed to the way of Jesus is not easy. But, being part of a smaller community of people committed to the same journey can make a huge difference in your life.

HOW MANY PEOPLE MAKE UP A SMALL GROUP?
That’s a lot like asking, "How many people make up a family?" Like families, there are no two small groups that are exactly alike. Here at Peoples Church there are typically 8 to 14 people per group. However, groups may range in size from 4 to 20 people depending on the circumstances of the group. At Peoples Church we encourage diversity within groups. By this we mean that healthy groups will have a broad spectrum of ages and life experiences of the people in them. It is not unusual to see a combination of single parents, married couples, single adults and empty nesters all in the same group. We have also found it best if you participate in group life with people who live close to you. When people are able to participate in spontaneous get-togethers, be easily accessible to each other, see one another frequently throughout the week, and enjoy meals together, it creates a basis for meaningful relationships. We believe that setting up our communities based on geography will provide the best foundation for meaningful growth and community life.

HOW DO I BECOME INVOLVED IN A SMALL GROUP?
Currently, the primary way to get connected into a small group is to contact Paul Zissler. Paul is the Small group coordinator for Peoples Church and he will help you find a group in your area. Contact Paul by calling 734-878-3407, or by emailing him at paul@peoplesefc.org.
